“Since I was a kid I’ve always had a love affair with Italian food. The comfort of it reminds me of sitting around the table with my family and eating my grandma’s eggplant parmesan. That’s the feeling I want to recreate for guests at Leonelli Taberna.” - Jonathan Benno, Chef

The rustic Italian cuisine served at Leonelli draws from Chef Jonathan Benno’s earliest food memories, his extensive travels through Italy, and his professional experience honing the craft of traditional culinary methods.

“We envision Leonelli Taberna as a handshake between old New York and old-world Italy.” - Aaron Von Rock, Beverage Director

“We want Leonelli Taberna to be a place where everyone feels comfortable and welcomed. There’s a warmth, a liveliness. Generosity is the common theme—generosity of time, of spirit, of hospitality.”- Antonio Begonja, Director of Operations

The Name

Inspired by classic Roman trattorias, the team wanted to find a name that paid tribute to The Eternal City. The word Leonelli refers to the significance of the lion in Roman history, where it has been depicted to symbolize strength, courage, leadership and ‘the majesty of the Roman people.’ There are three lion head figures lining the façade of the historic Evelyn Hotel in which Leonelli is located, which brought the idea for the name full circle.
